This project combines remediation processes as carried out by the United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) with phased urban design strategies and architectural interventions that turn
contaminated and wasted land along the NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line into dynamic public spaces. In
doing so, it operates at a gradient of spatial, systemic, and temporal scales. It asks: can the remediation
process yield public and programmatic value for architecture and urban design? It addresses this
question by exploring the process of converting brownfields into playgrounds.
